Wildebeest live in large herds in East Africa. The most famous herds occur in the Serengeti region of Tanzania and Kenya. In these places, the number of migratory wildebeest numbered more than 1 million. Along with hundreds of thousands of gazelles and zebras, the wildebeest’s journey is perhaps the largest animal migration on land.
The wildebeest’s journey is sometimes called the “circular migration” because they move around the Serengeti during the rainy season in search of food for distances of up to 800 – 1,600 km. According to Discovery, wildebeests are not only at risk of breaking their legs while jostling through a river full of crocodiles, but also having to face lions lurking on the other side.
Every year, nearly 1.5 million wildebeest and 20,000 other animals migrate from Tanzania to Kenya in search of new lawns and water sources. This magnificent phenomenon is known as the Great Migration.
At about this time, tourists from all over the world flock to Africa to witness the sight of hundreds of antelopes and zebras simultaneously crossing major rivers, evacuating in herds over the hills, field in the distance
