Over a year after being clubbed for five sixes in a row during an IPL match, Yash Dayal produced a memorable performance to help RCB qualify for the playoffs.

Yash Dayal’s father Chandarpal switched on the TV before his son geared up to bowl the final over of IPL 2024 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings last Saturday. With the hopes of win long gone, CSK now needed 17 off it to qualify for the IPL playoffs and Yash was asked to defend those runs by RCB.

MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja had kept CSK’s hopes alive as they blazed away in the slog overs to drag the contest into the final over in the high-scoring contest.

And then Yash ended up being struck for a six off the first delivery by Dhoni, bringing down the requirement to 11 off five.

“I blamed myself for ruining another match for my son. Dhoni can still tear apart any bowler,” Chandarpal was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. “I just folded my hands and started praying. ‘Aaj mere bachhe ka saath dena bhagwaan, fir se wo nahi hona chahiye’ (God, please support my son today. It should not happen again). It felt good the way he held his nerve after the first ball. I enjoyed the winning moment.”

Last season, when Yash was representing Gujarat Titans, he was smacked for five sixes in a row by Kolkata Knight Riders’ Rinku Singh. The mayhem propelled KKR to an unlikely win and the nightmarish end left a deep impact on Yash’s mind who was also trolled on social media.

“In one of the WhatsApp groups, a person I know shared a meme, mocking Yash for conceding five sixes and I still remember what he wrote with the picture ‘Prayagraj Express ki kahaani shuru hone se pehle hi khatam ho gayi’ (The story of Prayagraj Express has ended before it starting),” he Chandarpal said.

Chandarpal said the family decided to quite all WhatsApp group.

“Even when RCB picked him (Yash) in the auction for Rs 5 crore, I remember someone saying ‘Paise naale mei baha aaye Bangalore waale’ (The franchise threw the money in the drain),” he recalled.

This time though, the monstrous six from the bat of Dhoni didn’t rattle Yash who held his nerves to dismiss the CSK legend off the next delivery and completed the over conceding just seven runs as RCB completed a 27-run win to sneak into the playoffs.
