Justin Langer announced that he won’t be putting his name in the hat for a chance to be the next head coach for Team India.

Justin Langer ruled himself out of the running for the Indian men’s cricket team head coach’s job after having a discussion with Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking for a new head coach for the Indian men’s cricket team as Rahul Dravid’s stint will come to an end after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. According to reports, the former India captain is reportedly reluctant to carry on.

Langer is currently the head coach at LSG in the Indian Premier League after leaving the Australia position in 2022 amid reports of unrest in the side.

“It would be an amazing job, [but] I have [put myself out of contention]. I also know that it’s an all-encompassing role, and having done it for four years with the Australian team, honestly, it’s exhausting. And that’s the Australian job!” Langer was quoted as saying on BBC’s Stumped podcast.

When asked if he would take up the job in the future, Langer said: “You never say never. And the pressure of doing it in India… I was talking to KL Rahul and he said, ‘You know, if you think there’s pressure and politics in an IPL team, multiply that by a thousand, [that’s] coaching India. That was a good bit of advice, I guess.”

Langer announced that he won’t be putting his name in the hat for a chance to be the next head coach for Team India.

“It would be an awesome job, but not for me at the moment,” Langer said.

Also a No from Ponting

Earlier, another Aussie great, Ricky Ponting said he is not in the race for the India job. Ponting has been the head coach of the Delhi franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2018 and also filled in as Australia’s T20 coach on an interim basis in the past.

“…there were a few little one-on-one conversations during the IPL, just to get a level of interest from me as to whether I would do it,” Ponting told the International Cricket Council on Thursday.

“I’d love to be a senior coach of a national team, but with the other things that I have in my life and wanting to have a bit of time at home…

“Everyone knows if you take a job working with the Indian team you can’t be involved in an IPL team, so it would take that out of it as well.”

Several other IPL coaches are also in the reckoning for what is one of the most demanding roles in the game.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, who has been the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders, is a strong contender having guided the KKR to the IPL 2024 final.

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has also been linked to the job.
