Pat Cummins-led Australia stunned favourites India in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup to clinch their record-extending sixth title.

Pat Cummins has defended the lukewarm reception after Australian team reached home following their stunning ODI World Cup triumph in India last November. A clip of Cummins quietly making his way through the Sydney airport with a few journalists clicking his pictures with hardly any crowd to cheer him up after the world cup win.

India, who were unbeaten until the title clash, suffered a heartbreaking defeat in Ahmedabad as Australia, languishing at the bottom of the points table at one stage, completed a remarkable turnaround to take home a record-extending sixth ODI World Cup trophy.

Cummins says  the reception may not have been as massive as in India if they had won the title instead but the people were still buzzing.

“That’s Australia for you. It’s great, it’s peaceful!” quipped Cummins while responding to a query on the reception in a chat with SportsTak.

“It’s a little bit different because everyone flies off to different states. We didn’t have one big celebration back in Australia, but I can tell you that everyone was buzzing. Every time we went out on the streets over the next couple of weeks, everyone was absolutely buzzing about the World Cup final, as were we as players. It might not be streets lined up like you would’ve got here if India won, but people there were pretty happy,” he added.

Cummins, meanwhile, is in hunt for another trophy as captain having led his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad into the final of IPL 2024 where they will take on Kolkata Knight Riders tonight.

“I mean that would be great. I think the run (of winning titles) has got to stop at some point… yeah, it has been a great couple of years but I hadn’t captained in any T20 cricket before this series. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect,” Cummins said on the eve of the final in Chennai.

In 2023 alone Cummins captained Australia to two world titles – ICC World Test Championship and ODI World Cup and in between they also retained Ashes after drawing a five-match series 2-2 in England.
