Watch: MasterChef Aruna Vijay Shows Us Correct Way To Cut Food Packets

Are you someone who opens packets of sugar, and instant noodles at the drop of a hat? Don’t be sad. You are not alone. Most of us have been there. But, did you know that the triangular cutouts from these packets can cause a lot of pollution? Aruna Vijay, one of the top 4 finalists in MasterChef India 2023, shared a video on Instagram demonstrating the correct way to cut open a packet. A segment of her video includes a clip from Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast — featuring the founder of Solar Square Neeraj Jain, as a guest. In the clip, Neeraj can be heard emphasising the environmental impact of cutting packets incorrectly.

Neeraj Jain says, “Doodh ka packet ka hum ek corner cut karte hai. Maggi ke packet ka jo ek triangle sa corner cut karte hai na uski vajah se kitna pollution ho raha hai. Kyuki jo baaki pura vo packet hai na bada piece, vo recycle ho jata hai. Chote triangle na pakad me nahi aate. Yeh chale jaate hain ocean me. [When we cut the corner of a milk packet or the triangle from a Maggi packet, it leads to a lot of pollution. Because the remaining part of the packet is a large piece that can be recycled, but those small triangular pieces cannot be caught in the recycling process. They end up in the ocean.]”

Showing us the correct way to cut packets, Aruna Vijay takes a package of milk and instead of cutting off the triangle, she makes a straight cut without separating any part. The text overlaid on the video reads, “POV: Right way to cut your packets.”

In the caption, Aruna Vijay wrote, “Right way to cut your packets. Many a times while cutting our packs of Maggi or Milk, we end up cutting the edge triangle, now even though you put it out for recycling that tiny piece mostly ends up in the ocean. A small step & creating awareness can go a long way. Try this next time you cut your packs.”
