Legendary striker Gary Lineker has explained the role of Harry Kane in England’s EURO opener against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on June 16. The English captain looked quite pale on the occasion and managed a single shot during the 90-minute play. The Three Lions notched a narrow win in the thrilling contest, with Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham scoring the only goal of the match in the 13th minute. They got a few more opportunities later in the game but failed to capitalise on them. Despite being a goal-poaching forward, Kane loves to operate from the deep, linking up with the playmakers.

Speaking about his performance on BBC, Lineker said, “Harry Kane isn’t necessarily sacrificing himself for the team in terms of the fact he can still get in the box and score goals. He is playing his part, he’s not dropping deep like we’ve seen from him in the past, he’s keeping Serbia deep to make that space for the creative players behind him. He won’t care about general touches, just those he can make to put the ball in the back of the net,” as quoted by Mirror.
Harry Kane got a single scoring opportunity in the EURO opener. He followed a cross from Jarrod Bowen and could have headed it towards the opposition’s goal. Serbian goalkeeper, Predrag Rajkovic ultimately came up with a stunning effort to deny the chance.
After England secured three points from the crucial game, Harry Kane said on the post-match show, “We knew it was going to be a tough game, Serbia posed a lot of threats and had some good players. They will make it a battle for you and I think we dealt with it really well. There was a spell in the second half where we got camped in our box and we found it hard to get out but it was an important win tonight,” Mirror quoted.
Kane will return to action when England take on Denmark in the second group fixture of the EURO on June 20 in Frankfurt.
