T20 World Cup: Afghanistan beat Australia (AP)
Wasim Jaffer felt Afghanistan ‘played to their potential and defeated a very good Australia team’ in the T20 World Cup.
Afghanistan ‘shocked’ Australia by 21 runs at the 2024 T20 World Cup for their first-ever win over them in international cricket. Wasim Jaffer though feels that Afghanistan’s win should not be treated as an upset.
“Do not disrespect Afghanistan by calling this an upset. Afg are good enough to beat any team on their day. They played to their potential today and defeated a very good Aus team. A fact that should be celebrated. Congratulations and well played,” Wasim Jaffer posted on social media.

The former India batter also drew attention to the fact that Afghanistan exacted revenge after Australia had inflicted a heart-breaking defeat at the 2023 cricket World Cup in India.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran shared an opening stand of 118 before Gulbadin Naib took over to drive Afghanistan to keep their hopes of reaching the T20 World Cup semi-finals alive in their Group One Super Eight encounter at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Saint Vincent And The Grenadines on Saturday.
Half centuries from Gurbaz and Zadran helped the Afghans rack up 148-6 in their 20 overs, before their bowlers dismissed the Australians for 127 on a tricky Kingstown track. Naib claimed 4-20 and Naveen-ul-Haq bagged 3-20, but it was the third century partnership of the tournament from Gurbaz and Zadran that laid the foundation for the win.
A win for Australia would have sent the 2021 champions and India into the last four, but even a second hat-trick in as many matches from Pat Cummins was not enough to keep their unbeaten record at the tournament intact. Australia are now staring at early elimination from the World Cup. Australia now must win their match against India on Monday and also hope that Afghanistan lose to Bangladesh in their next match.
