Rohit Sharma achieved a rare feat during his half-century against England in the semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma continued his fine form at the 2024 T20 World Cup as he peeled off a superb half-century against England in the second semi-final in Guyana on Thursday. Rohit scored 57 off 39 with the help of six fours and two sixes.

During the course of his innings Rohit completed 5000 runs as captain and thus became the fifth ever Indian to do so after Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

Rohit now has 5033 runs from 122 matches (across formats) as captain at an average of 42.65. He has 11 centuries and 30 half-centuries to his name.

Most runs as captain for India in international cricket

Overall, the 37-year-old has scored 19,069 runs across formats. He has 48 centuries and 104 half-centuries to his name.

Australia legend Ricky Ponting holds the all-time record for scoring the most runs as captain in international history. He scored 15440 as captain in 324 matches including 41 centuries and 88 half-centuries.

South African Graeme Smith follows him at the second spot on this list with 14878 runs from 286 matches including 33 centuries and 77 fifties.

India batter Virat Kohli completes the top-three with 12883 runs from 213 matches including 41 hundreds and 58 half-centuries.

So far, only six players in international cricket history have scored 10,000 or more runs as captain including Ponting, Smith, Kohli, Stephen Fleming, MS Dhoni and Allan Border.

Rohit made his international debut in June 2007 during an ODI against Ireland. He’s also the only batter in ODI history to have scored three double-centuries with his 264 vs Sri Lanka the highest ever individual score in format’s history.

Currently, he’s captaining India at the 2024 T20 World Cup, the second time he’s leading at the competition. He was the captain when India made it to the semi-final of the tournament when it was held in 2022.

Rohit also led India at the 2023 ODI World Cup at home where they stormed into the final unbeaten before losing to Australia. Besides that, he also led India into the final of the ICC World Test Championship last year where they finished runners-up.
