BCCI secretary Jay Shah says prize money decision was collectively taken by office bearers.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a cash reward of Rs 125 crore for the Indian cricket team after they won the 2024 T20 World Cup title. In an interaction with reporters in Barbados, secretary Jay Shah reveals it was a collective decision of the office bearers to reward the side for ending the long wait for the title.

“We last won the title in 2007 and won it after nearly 17 years. The decision of the prize money was collectively taken by the BCCI office bearers. We were the No.1 ranked side across formats two months ago. Cricket is treated like a religion in our country and our boys won the tournament which was played by twenty teams, so we need to do something for them,” says Shah.

Shah further clarifies that the prize money will be shared between the entire Indian contingent – from players to the selectors.

“As far as Rs 125 crore is concerned, it will cover the players, support staff, coaches and selectors as well. Everyone,” adds Shah.

With the wait for a ICC title finally coming to an end, the Indian cricket board has already locked their next targets and will be focussing on the World Test Championship and the ICC Champions Trophy.

“The way this team is progressing, our next target is to win WTC final and Champions Trophy,” says Shah.

Three Indian players – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja – announced their retirement from T20Is after the title win but will continue to serve the nation in ODIs and Tests. Shah is confident that the experienced squad will put up a good a show in the upcoming ICC tournaments.

“The team is going to be more or less same for these two tournaments because players have taken retirement from T20Is only. We will have an experienced team and I am confident we will do well there as well,” says Shah.

The Indian cricket team is currently stranded in Barbados because of the hurricane as the airport has been shut and all outgoing flights have been cancelled. Secretary Shah is personally overseeing the arrangements for the side’s departure and the Indian cricket board is trying to arrange a direct charter the moment airport operations resume.

As CricketNext had reported on Sunday, Rohit Sharma-led unit is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi after returning from the Caribbean and senior board officials will be finalising details of the visit. The PM spoke to captain Rohit, coach Dravid and senior batter Kohli on phone after the title win and congratulated the entire side for ending the long wait for a ICC title.
