When Will Gautam Gambhir’s Tenure as Head Coach Begin? Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s Future at Risk; India’s T20I Rebuild – News18

Following Gambhir’s appointment, it remains to be seen how Indian cricket moves forward and whether the new Head Coach will continue to rely on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the ODI and Test formats.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have confirmed that the former India opener Gautam Gambhir is the men’s senior team Head Coach. His appointment is certainly one that has gotten the Indian cricketing fraternity optimistic with his presence leading to trophies as a player and as a mentor in the Indian Premier League.

When Will Gautam Gambhir’s Role as India Head Coach Begin?

According to a release by the BCCI, Gambhir’s role as the Head coach of the Indian team will begin during their away visit to Sri Lanka where the Indian team will take part in a three-match ODI and T20I series starting from July 27, 2024.

What Happens to the Support Staff following Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s Head Coach? 

According to the release by the BCCI, the likes of Paras Mhambrey (Bowling Coach, T Dilip (Fielding Coach) and Vikram Rathour (Batting Coach) are set to end their tenure in their respective roles and it is yet to be seen who will be appointed as their replacements.

India’s Set to Rebuild T20I Squad?

With Gambhir’s appointment and also the retirement of senior stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, India’s T20I squad will likely see a rebuild with an injection of young talents. With the likes of Hardik Pandya tipped to be the new skipper in the shortest format, it is yet to be confirmed who will lead the T20I side in the long run.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s Career at Risk?

While Gambhir has certainly been able to bring about success with younger players in the recently concluded season of the Indian Premier League, speculations regarding the futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been the talk of the town under Gambhir’s tenure. But no official statement or decision has taken place regarding the futures of the senior India stars but reports have suggested that both Rohit and Kohli have asked for an extended break following the T20 World Cup win.

Kohli was already on a two-month break which led to him missing out on the England Test series to be present for the birth of his son Akaay on February 15. He then participated in the T20I series against Afghanistan, the IPL and the T20 World Cup as well.

Rohit on the other hand has been a part of the Indian squad since the away Test series against South Africa through to the T20 World Cup 2024 making it non-stop cricket right from January.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Gambhir navigates through these situations and whether he will continue to rely on the services of the Indian stalwarts or opt to transition younger players into the side.
