2016 Jim Dandy Stakes Race Preview at Saratoga Race Course
Mohaymen 9-5 – Kiaran McLaughlin trained colt finished second (albeit by a wide margin) in Eclipse Awards voting behind Nyquist for two year old males. He was undefeated in his first five career starts but has posted consecutive fourth place finishes ahead of this weekend – in the Kentucky Derby last time out May 7 and in the Grade 1 Florida Derby April 2- a tiny bit of a concern ahead of this race. Before those uncharacteristic efforts were five starts and five wins including an impressive 2 1/4 length win in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes February 27, a score by 3 1/2 lengths in the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes January 30, in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes November 28, the Grade 2 Nashua Stakes November 4 and a dominant maiden score at first asking. Mohaymen had been a favorite on the Triple Crown trail and hopes to prove why once again this week. He tries to snap a two race losing streak from post 3 Saturday with Junior Alvarado aboard the interesting morning line favorite.
Destin 2-1 – has seven career starts for Todd Pletcher with three wins and two second place finishes. He enters off a good runner-up finish behind Creator in the Belmont Stakes in June which followed an OK sixth in the Kentucky Derby and a terrific two race win streak – the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby March 12 and by 2 1/4 lengths in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes February 13. Before that was his only other off-the-board finish – a fourth in the Grade 3 LeComte Stakes at Fair Grounds January 16. Destin has been good so far and will be after his third graded stakes score – with Javier Castellano in the irons of the second betting choice from gate 4.

Creator 3-1 – Steve Asmussen trained colt has placed in eight of 10 career starts – three wins, four seconds and a third place finish. He arrives off a career-defining win in the Belmont Stakes – at 16-1 odds June. It followed a disappointing thirteenth in the Kentucky Derby, another win at 11-1 odds in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby April 16 and a third in his stakes debut – the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes March 19 – both results at Oaklawn Park. Creator, outside of one bad start has been one of the better three year olds in the nation. He tries for his second straight graded stakes win and third in his last four starts from the rail Saturday with Irad Ortiz in the saddle of the third choice.
Governor Malibu 9-2 – has placed in seven of eight career starts for trainer Christophe Clement – two wins, four seconds and a third place finish. Last time out was his only off-the-board finish – a fourth in the Belmont Stakes which followed a respectable second in his graded stakes debut – the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes May 14, a second after being DQ’s from first in the minor Federisco Tesio Stakes at Laurel Park April 9, a good win in the minor Gander Stakes at Aqueduct in February and a maiden score in November. He has been in every race so far and hopes for his first graded stakes score Saturday. Joel Rosario has been tabbed with accomplishing that goal from post 5.
Race Me Home 15-1 – Irish bred Dale Romans trained colt has a win and a second place finish in four career starts. He makes his graded stakes debut Saturday off an OK second in the minor Easy Goer Stakes at Belmont Park June 11 and a maiden score May 7. He failed to place fin his first two career starts. Race Me Home takes an enormous step up in competition in so-so form and will be after a major breakthrough from the outside post 6. Luis Saez has been chosen to ride.
Laoban 20-1 – will hit the track for the eighth time for trainer Eric Guillot having recorded two seconds and one third place finish so far – no wins. He was last seen running a disappointing fifth in the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park July 9 which followed a sixth in the Preakness Stakes May 21, a fourth in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes April 9, a respectable second in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct March 5, a troubled third in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita January 9 and a second in a MSW at Los Alamitos December 5. Laoban has failed to place in his last three starts overall and will be after his first career victory from gate 2 Saturday with Jose Ortiz in the saddle.
