Where Do Bento Boxes Come From?

The concept of bento has a long drawn history. It dates back to the Kamakura period in Japan, where simple packed meals were prepared for travellers and workers. The word “bento” literally means ‘convenient’. Then during the Edo period, bento culture evolved significantly. Wooden boxes were elaborately crafted, and these meals became popular for tea parties, theatre outings and picnics. Further, aluminium bento boxes were introduced during the Meiji period, making them more accessible to the general public. Then after the Second World War, there was a sharp rise in the sales of disposable bento boxes, as they rose in popularity.
