According to reports, selectors are considering picking Arshdeep Singh for the India-Australia Test series, which starts on November 22 in Perth.
Arshdeep Singh was on fire for India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The left-arm pacer played in all eight matches for the Rohit Sharma-led side during the 20-team tournament in the West Indies and the USA and picked up 17 wickets to finish as the joint-leading wicket-taker in the tournament. After helping India win the T20 World Cup again after 17 years, the 25-year-old pacer from Punjab expressed his desire to play Test cricket for India in the future.
And if reports are to be believed, then he could soon become a Test cricketer for India. There are high chances that he will be part of India’s Test squad for the marquee series against Australia later this year.
India is set to travel to Australia to take on the World Test Championship winners in a five-match series.
According to a report in the Times of India on Thursday (July 25), selectors are keen on picking Arshdeep for the Test team, and there are talks about his inclusion in the red-ball squad.
“Arshdeep has moved the ball impressively in white-ball matches for India. He could be asked to play a few domestic red-ball games, starting with the Duleep Trophy on September 5, to enhance his chances of selection for the Australia tour. There’s a real chance that he could be India’s trump card, along with (Jasprit Bumrah, in Australia,” a source was quoted as saying by TOI.
“In fact, the selectors are keen on another left-arm pace option in the white-ball side at least, which is why Khaleel Ahmed toured Zimbabwe and has been picked for both the ODIs and T20Is in Sri Lanka,” the source added.
Arshdeep, who made his international debut for India in July 2022 against England in Southampton, has played six ODIs and 52 T20Is so far and has 10 and 79 wickets to his name. The youngster has also featured in 16 first-class matches, in which he managed to dismiss 49 batters.
India tour of Australia starts on November 22
Unlike the last tour of Australia in 2020–21, India will play five Test matches this time, and the series opener is scheduled to take place at Perth Stadium on November 22. India won the last two Test series played on Australian soil and will be eager to complete the hat-trick of wins this time.
