Asha Parekh reflects on the unconventional Holi sequence in ‘Kati Patang’ | – Times of India

Holi has always added extra vibrance to the Indian cinematic world. Several Bollywood movies would be incomplete without their Holi sequences and songs. The iconic Holi scene from Shakti Samanta’s 1971 film ‘Kati Patang’ is a perfect example of the same. It remains etched in cinematic memory, primarily due to its unconventional treatment and underlying social commentary.
In the scene, Asha Parekh‘s character, a widow, finds herself at the center of the festivities, yet emotionally distant. As Rajesh Khanna‘s character leads the revelry with the spirited anthem ‘Aaj Na Chodenge Bass Humjoli Khelenge Hum Holi,’ Asha’s portrayal exudes subdued sorrow and regret, symbolizing her exclusion from the joyous celebrations.

The song’s climax, however, takes a daring turn as Rajesh Khanna’s character dares to defy societal norms by applying color to Asha Parekh’s hair—a symbolic gesture suggesting a proposal of marriage.
