While many Britons will be wanting to jet abroad this summer, a staycation is also a great option for a more convenient and cheap break.

According to new research on “the best counties in the UK for a summer staycation”, the best place to enjoy a UK holiday this year is the Isle of Wight.


The Isle of Wight has the most things to do, with 294 activities per 100 square miles.

There’s something for everyone, whether you want to relax on one of the Isle’s 39 beaches or explore one of 125 walking trails, according to the team at Moneybarn Car Finance.

They said: “Campervanning holidays are growing in interest on the Isle’s 15 motorhome parks, which have seen 2,270 searches in the past year.”

The experts analysed factors including the number of motorhome parks, campervan rental listings, Google search trends for campervan hire, the number of local activities, walking trails, cycling trails, beaches and lakes – with the Isle of Wight coming out on top overall.

A visitor to Osborne House on the Isle of Wight told Tripadvisor it was a “must-visit”, while another called it “a fab day out”.

A third visitor gave the former retreat of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert a stellar review: “Of all the (many) stately homes I’ve visited, Osborne House is undoubtedly the one I’ve enjoyed the most. The grounds contain many of my favourite things – woodland, beach, gardens and wildlife.”

A visitor to the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary said: “Great parking and fantastic food, best of all it’s free to visit!”

Another said: “Please, please donate to this wonderful charity. Well worth a visit, staff are lovely and the animals are well cared for.”

Kent was named the number two staycation spot for summer 2024, with 257 activities per 100 square miles.

Water lovers can enjoy a whopping 56 beaches and six lakes, while adventurers can immerse themselves in one of 625 walking trails.

Sussex came in at number three for staycation spot with the most things to do, with 242 attractions per 100 square miles of its “stunning coastline and rolling countryside”.

Britons can spend leisurely days enjoying 73 walking trails per 100 square miles, as well as six different lakes and 32 beaches to beat the summer heat.

For those looking to unwind on their staycation, the UK’s most peaceful spot offers “total relaxation” and has beautiful beaches.
