The Indian National Congress (INC), which contested the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024 as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, is currently leading on 19 seats. The party had fielded candidates in 101 of the 288 constituencies. As per the MVA seat-sharing agreement, 101 seats were allotted to the Congress while Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) contested in 95 and 86 seats, respectively.
In the 2019 Maharashtra elections, the Congress had contested on 147 seats, but won just 44, a success rate of 29.9%. It formed the government with undivided Shiv Sena and undivided NCP but was ousted in 2022 when both its allies saw their respective parties split down the middle, with Eknath Shinde’s Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP joining hands with the BJP.
Key candidates fielded by the Congress this time include KC Padavi from Akkalkuwa (ST), Nanabhau Falgunrao Patole (also known as Nana Patole) from Sakoli, Dhiraj Vilasrao Deshmukh from Latur Rural, Amit Vilasrao Deshmukh from Latur City, and Prithviraj Chavan from Karad South.

In the run-up to the 2024 Maharashtra polls, the BJP launched a ‘Say No to Congress’ campaign, highlighting incidents like the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the lynching of Palghar sadhus that took place during Congress regimes.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has deputed senior leaders Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel and G Parameshwara as observers for Maharashtra. Most exit polls have predicted victory for the BJP-led Mahayuti while some gave an edge to the Maha Vikas Aghadi.
Ahead of the Maharashtra election results, Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot had said there would not be any tug-of-war among MVA partners in deciding on the CM post. It would not take more than a day to “figure out who will get what position”, Pilot had said. In the run-up to elections, Congress leader Nana Patole was touted to be a chief ministerial contender if the MVA got majority.
