The Indian Meteorological Department recently issued a red alert for some states including Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Madhya Pradesh, as severe heatwave continues in many parts of the country. This week, the temperature in the national capital even crossed 50 degrees Celsius.

As the temperature has increased in recent days, people are facing several problems because of the heatwave. Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, cramps, rashes and severe dehydration are some of the common illnesses associated with high temperatures. Extreme heat can affect people of all ages, from children to the elderly, and can exacerbate the above heat-related problems.

So it is important to follow some tips and precautions to keep you and your family safe during the heatwave. Follow these tips to stay safe during the extreme heat:

Maintain adequate hydration: Dehydration is common during the summer due to intense heat. Adequate amounts of water and fluids should be consumed to compensate for fluid loss during excessive sweating. Apart from water, you can drink coconut water, lemon water, cucumber juice, buttermilk and many other health drinks.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the above symptoms.

Wear breathable clothing: Wearing loose and light-coloured clothing during scorching hours will help prevent your body from overheating. And during summer, start wearing cotton clothes. Apply sunscreen whenever you go outside, regardless of whether it’s hot or mild. Use a hat or umbrella to protect the skin and deal with the heat.
