Virat Kohli (L) and Gautam Gambhir (R) – X

The Indian umpire, Anil Chaudhary recalled Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir’s club cricket days where the two were a class apart.

Arguably among the finest cricketers produced in Delhi, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir have come a long way since their playing days for the state. The former is currently one of the greatest batters of the current generation and possibly of all time, while the latter has had an illustrious career with the Indian Cricket Team and now is working as the Team India Head Coach.

The popular Indian umpire, Anil Chaudhary recalled his younger years where he witnessed the talents of Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli during his club cricket days. Speaking in an interview with the 2 Sloggers podcast, reflected on his memories of Virat and Gambhir.

He recalled, “When Virat was probably playing under 15, he was also playing a Pritampura league match of ours and I was also playing with my team. Gautam and Virat. I still remember both of them because they’ve been playing since childhood in Delhi.

They used to run so much that the other batter was run out half the time. Meaning, that if they played, they would score 100 but someone or the other would get run out. They were very quick, very aggressive and different, no doubt about it, and they used to get big scores, even in small ones, 150, 200 over match, even in 40 over matches,” he added.

Now Kohli is arguably the most entertaining batter in world cricket. It was his knock in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa that proved to be pivotal in helping the Men in Blue claim their second T20 world title.

With Gautam Gambhir at the helm as the new head coach of the side, the Indian team will hope to press on and assert their dominance in world cricket across all formats.

Gambhir began his stint as the Indian head coach in the white-ball tour against Sri Lanka. In the T20I series, the World Champions maintained their dominance with a 3-0 series victory. However, it was a different story in the ODI series. After the first game was a tie, the remaining two games were won by the home team, who outplayed the Indian batters with their quality spin-bowling unit.

The Indian team will have their next assignment at home where they will take on their next-door neighbours, Bangladesh in a two-match Test series followed by a three-match T20I series.
