Las Virgenes Stakes 2014 Contenders & Odds
Las Vegas, NV – Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California will play host to the Grade 1 Las Las Virgenes Stakes on Saturday, February 1. Three year old fillies will be featured as they go one mile on Santa Anita’s main track in search of the winner’s share of the $300,000 purse.
A field of eight three year old females have been confirmed for the Las Virgenes – race 7 on Santa Anita’s Saturday schedule. Post time is 3:30 PM. Let’s take a brief glance into the past performances of all eight entries for this Grade 1 stakes.
Streaming – Bob Baffert trained filly looks to remain perfect in her short career Saturday. She is coming off a very impressive win over Taste Like Candy among others in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet at 11-1 odds December 7 after a MSW score in her debut November 15. Martin Garcia will be aboard from the far outside post in the 122 pound highweight’s first start on dirt.
Taste Like Candy – has been very impressive in her three career starts for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. She enters of a pair of runner-up finishes – the Grade 2 Santa Ynez last time out on this track January 4 and behind Streaming in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes at Hollywood Park December 7. Her only other career start was a MSW score on this track in October. Rafael Bejarano gets the start from gate 7 Saturday.
Artemis – Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly has improved each and every time out. She has raced three MSW races so far in her career with a third in her debut, a second December 8 and a win last time out on this track January 3. She has shown good speed in the past and hopes to keep her steady improvement going.

Fashion Plate – Simon Callahan trainee broke maiden last time out in gate to wire fashion by 6 1/2 lengths in her third career start – at Santa Anita December 29 after a third and a seventh respectively in a pair of MSW races. She steps into stakes company for the first time Saturday with the legendary Gary Stevens in the reins.
Arethusa – is coming off a fifth in her graded stakes debut – the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet December 7 at Hollywood Park after a win her stakes debut – the Sharp Cat Stakes on that same track November 16. Prior to those results were three MSW races which produced a second and a third place finish.
Sushi Empire – has five career starts for trainer Eoin Harty with a win, a second and a third place finish. Her last three starts have gotten her on the radar for sure – last time out was a win in the minor Blue Norther Stakes here January 1 after a third in the Grade 3 Miesque Stakes at Hollywood Park November 30 and a second in a MSW three weeks earlier on that same track. She makes her first start on dirt Saturday looking to keep the roll going.
Saintly Joan – has four career starts for trainer John O’Hara with a win in her second career start – a MSW at seven furlongs on this track in October and one third place finish – in the minor Sharp Cat Stakes at Hollywood Park November 16. Last time out was a sixth in the minor Blue Norther Stakes on this track January 1.
Earthflight – British bred filly makes her North American debut Saturday after eight starts at home produces three wins and a third place finish. She enters having won three of her last four starts on synthetic track however – two straight ahead of the Las Virgenes.
