The chief minister said party workers must pull up their socks for the assembly by-elections to be held on 10 seats in the state and the 2027 assembly elections

Overconfidence, shifting of Dalit votes, failure in banking upon the achievements and poor presence on social media turned out to be the major reasons behind BJP’s poor show in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said on Monday as he asked party workers to pull up their socks.

“We have to hoist the BJP flag in the state once again. Everyone will have to be active from now on for the assembly by-elections to be held on 10 seats in the state and the 2027 assembly elections. All Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, MLAs, MLCs, district panchayat presidents, mayors, block pramukhs, chairmen and councillors, everyone should start preparing for the 2027 elections from today itself,” said Adityanath while addressing BJP’s state working committee at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Auditorium of Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University.

Highlighting the reasons behind the party’s dismal performance, the chief minister said: “Under the able leadership of PM Modi, we had maintained constant pressure on the opposition in UP, achieving great success in 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2022. But the shifting of votes and overconfidence hurt our expectations. The Opposition, which had earlier accepted defeat and given up all their hope, can be seen jumping and dancing now.”

Adityanath also cited shift in backward votes as another major reason behind the party’s performance. “BJP is a party that has the highest respect for the Constitution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had installed the original copy of the Constitution in the new Parliament House. BJP is a party that protects the rights of SC-ST and backward classes. But the Opposition spoiled the atmosphere by spreading rumours and creating confusion. It divided people in the name of caste. We have to be alert and cautious about it,” he added.

Citing an example, he said the SP government had changed the name of Kannauj Medical College, which was named after Baba Saheb, to Rajkiya Medical College. “It was the BJP that changed the name again after Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. Similarly, no voice was raised against the murder of Raju Pal, Ramesh Pal and Ramesh Yadav who belonged to backward caste. Why did the voices of the victims get strength only in the BJP government? But, the point was never raised,” said the chief minister.

He said the BJP government gave the benefits of schemes to everyone without any discrimination. Moreover, there were instances when SP leaders had insulted Dalit thinkers and great men from time to time. “They had also stopped student scholarship for Dalit students in 2016, which was restarted by BJP in 2017. But the party workers failed to bank upon the party’s achievements,” he added.

Besides, he also told the workers to be active on social media and refute rumours, if any. “Using this social media, opposition forces and foreigners were engaged in a conspiracy, in which they became successful. We are people with a nationalist mission. BJP workers have to see what is going on in social media. We have to immediately refute the rumours,” he said.
