Portugal travel warning amid ‘state of alert’ – situation is ‘fast-moving and could change rapidly’
Britons have been issued a travel warning for popular holiday destination Portugal.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) gave Britons a new hazard warning of forest fires.
Holidaymakers were warned: “There are currently a significant number of forest fires burning in several parts of Portugal.
“The Portuguese government has declared a state of alert until 11:59pm on Thursday, September 19.

“Access to forests and activities in rural areas may be restricted. Roads may be closed due to smoke and ash.
“The situation is fast-moving and could change rapidly. Keep up-to-date with developments and follow the advice of the Civil Protection Authority.”
Holidaymakers were advised to consult the FCDO’s safety and security page for further information.

Wildfires
Holidaymakers were warned: “Wildfires can start anywhere in Portugal. The risk of fires is higher when the weather is hot and dry.
“Fires have become more common due to drought and high temperatures during the summer months.
“Wildfires are highly dangerous and unpredictable. The Portuguese authorities may evacuate areas and close roads for safety reasons.”
Britons were advised to take three key steps to stay safe. Holidaymakers should familiarise themselves with local safety and emergency procedures, follow the advice of the Portuguese authorities and call the emergency services on 112 if they see a wildfire.

The FCDO warned: “Starting a wildfire, even if it is by accident, is illegal and you could get a fine or a prison sentence.
“For information about active wildfires and forecasts, visit the Portuguese Met Office website for information on Portugal and Madeira.”
Those visiting Portugal should also consult the FCDO for essential guidance on entry requirements, safety and security, health and getting help.
