‘Stay Calm, Don’t Let Outside Elements Influence You’: Ravi Shastri’s Reveals Advice For Gautam Gambhir – News18

IND vs AUS: Ravi Shastri has advised Gautam Gambhir to not let outside influences dictate his decisions ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series-opener in Perth.
IND vs AUS: The former India Head Coach, Ravi Shastri who guided the Indian team to win two tours of Australia urged the current man at the helm, Gautam Gambhir focus on calmness and avoid knee-jerk reactions during the five-match Test series between India and Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy set to begin on November 22.
Shastri who knows a thing or two about India winning in Australia has suggested that Gambhir not allow outside elements to influence his game plan as the latter faces his biggest challenge since taking up the role as Head Coach, earlier this year.
“The first thing would be to stay calm and not let outside elements influence you in any way,” Shastri advised Gambhir while talking to the media in the Star Sports press room.
“Avoid getting into positions where knee-jerk reactions happen. Stay calm and focus on understanding your players. You’ll notice what it takes for a player to thrive,” he added.
Another key aspect that Shastri reckons is important is to understand the players and also utilise the right man according to the situations which can be worked on with enough research or experience from the dressing room.
“You’ll understand team situations where a certain player might be better suited than another, based on your understanding of their temperament,” Shastri commented.
“These insights don’t come overnight — it took me some time to understand everyone. Gautam might already have a basic understanding of the players’ temperaments. He might have seen them in the IPL or sat in the dressing room with them when he played,” he added.
“However, there are many players with different mindsets, cultures, and backgrounds. For example, there could be a player who’s an introvert, but with the right push and confidence, he could become a match-winner for you. “Understanding those kinds of players and enabling them to work and play in a way that brings out their best would be crucial,” Shastri explained.
Despite India coming on the back of a 0-3 series whitewash against New Zealand on home soil, Shastri believes that the Australian team will be quietly confident but won’t let that underestimate the Indian side in their pursuit to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after almost 10 years.
