Their vibrant and meticulously designed costumes, which range in price from as low as Rs 10 to as high as Rs 10,000, are sought after not only in Mathura but across India. The demand for these beautifully crafted garments draws a huge crowd each year.
Mathura potrays communal harmony through its festive celebrations. Here, the participation in each other’s festivals is a common sight. Muslims enthusiastically join in Hindu festivities like Holi and Janmashtami, while Hindus also celebrate Muslim festivals with equal fervour.
This spirit of unity is embodied by the Muslim family that continues the long-standing tradition of crafting Lord Krishna’s attire. The tradition of making costumes for Laddu Gopal began with Mohammad Iqrar’s great grandfather and has been passed down through generations.
Iqrar and his family are deeply committed to their craft and feels a spiritual connection through their work. Talking to News18, Iqrar said, “When we prepare Laddu Gopal’s costume, it feels as though Lord Krishna is guiding us. The designs come to life as if directed by him. Creating these intricate costumes is a labour of love that requires several hours of meticulous work.”
“The process involves careful attention to detail to ensure the garments fit perfectly and maintain their elegance. Despite the detailed work, no machine is used and everything is handcrafted with precision and care. At present around 20 men work here and these costumes demand is not only in Mathura Vrindavan but throught the country,” Iqrar added.
The family’s dedication and the unique beauty of their designs make these costumes a special part of the Janmashtami celebrations, symbolising the deep-seated unity and cultural richness of Mathura.
