The United Kingdom offers a wide range of locations for the ultimate staycation, with many towns renowned for their fairytale features.

In a new list compiled by LoveExploring, Castle Combe has taken the crown as the “prettiest” among the nation’s “small towns and villages”.

The travel platform said: “They don’t come prettier than this Cotswolds charmer with its honey-coloured stone cottages, 13th-century church (whose faceless clock is thought to be one of the oldest in the country) and little stone bridges that cross the ambling River Bybrook.

“It’s no wonder Castle Combe has caught the eye of film location scouts – credits include Stardust and Stephen Spielberg’s War Horse.”

Bibury, in Gloucestershire, England, came second on the list, having once been declared the most beautiful village in the country by famous writer and designer William Morris.

“A hundred or so years later the sentiment certainly seems to stand,” states the Love Exploring website.

“A huddle of stone houses and green hills with a slip of the River Coln running through it, Bibury is simply picture-perfect.”

Looe, in Cornwall, secured the third place on the list, followed by Portmeirion in Gwynedd in Wales, and Cromer, in Norfolk.

It comes as a new survey has crowned St Andrew’s the best place in the UK to enjoy food and wine.

The findings emerged in a survey of more than 5,000 consumer watchdog members compiled by Which?

Introducing the list, the Watchdogs said: “The food available at the British seaside has improved hugely.

“There’s not somewhere special to eat in every part of the coastline – from St Andrews in Scotland to Fowey in Cornwall.

“A total of 21 seaside towns got impressive, four-star ratings for food and drinks in our latest survey.

“Almost 5,000 Which? Members gave us their views on the best and worst seaside towns.
