Travis Head checking out his broken bat in an MLC game

Head was evidently stunned after a portion of his bat flew to the mid-wicket region

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell broke Travis Head’s bat with a cracking delivery during a Major League Cricket (MLC) match in Morrisville on Monday. Head opened the innings for Washington Freedom after the Los Angeles Knight Riders set a target of 130. In the second over of the chase, Russell bowled a short-pitch delivery to Head who attempted to play a pull shot but could not manage to time it properly. The ball hit the upper part of the Australian batter’s willow and broke it into two pieces.

Head was evidently stunned after a portion of his bat flew to the mid-wicket region. Some people in the crowd were also shocked by the on-field incident and their reaction has been captured in a now-viral on X (formerly Twitter).

Travis Head finished his knock as the highest scorer for Washington Freedom who won the low-scoring contest by eight wickets to continue their unbeaten run in the tournament. Head opened along with captain Steven Smith and the Aussie duo stitched a 79-run partnership. Head scored a quickfire 54 off 32 balls. The southpaw slammed six maximums and two boundaries before being dismissed by Shadley van Schalkwyk.

After the victory was sealed, Travis head said, “Was [pitch] on the slower side and took more spin than previous games. Nice to get a few away and nice to get a win. Nice to play the full fixture. Nice to get some luck and get away, it was nice to get a few away off the middle. Good to maximise when me and Smithy were going. Looking forward to the rest of the tournament,” as quoted by The Times of India.

While Travis Head returned to the dressing room in the ninth over, Steven Smith remained unbeaten till the end. He hit two boundaries and as many sixes to score 42 off 36 balls. For the Washington Freedom, Rachin Ravindra and wicketkeeper Andries Gous contributed with 11 and 15 runs respectively.

Washington Freedom currently lead the MLC standings with seven points from four matches. The Steven Smith-led side will look to continue the winning momentum when they take on MI New York in the next match on July 17 in Texas.
